An index that measures online recruitment advertising demand has shown that demand grew in December 2011.
The Monster Employment Index, which is put together by the widely-used international jobs board, showed that the index had an 11 per cent year-on-year rise in December. The figures, however, were still far from the 22 per cent growth rate that was seen in September 2010.
The sectors that saw year-on-year growth included transport, post and logistics, and IT. The most significant annual declines, however, were seen in the public sector and defence and community sectors, closely followed by the tourism and hospitality trade.
The Chief Executive of fixed fee online recruiter Recruitment Genius, Geoff Newman, commented that “strong growth in web recruitment is not particularly surprising given the huge cost-savings and reduced time-to-hire. Indeed we were noticing strong demand with employers posting jobs right up to Christmas Day”.
A spokesman for Monster UK operation of the site, said figures showed that there was a clear improvement in the state of the UK job market when compared to 2009.
“The Monster Employment Index recorded a consistent increase in overall online job opportunities,” he said.
“Though this upward trend continues, the pace of increase has slowed in recent months. This could possibly be attributed to the severe cold snap in December, which has had a particular impact on recruitment activity in sectors such as hospitality and tourism and sales.”
He did point out, however, that a slow-down in opportunities was becoming apparent before the cold weather, suggesting that companies are waiting to see how 2011 unfolds before embarking on further recruitment processes.
