This world-famous science museum is world renowned for its historic collections, awe-inspiring galleries and inspirational exhibitions. Their vision is to be the best place in the world for people to enjoy science, and they are seeking an enthusiastic experienced and capable Technician, with a specialism in woodwork, who wants to be part of their ongoing success.

Their team has responsibility for the technical functionality of the Museum Gallery Displays and Exhibits, ensuring they are safe and maintained to a constantly high standards. As a member of the team, you'll participate in the rota to switch the Museum on and off, and respond to calls about broken exhibits, often repairing them on the spot. You'll be responsible for designing and manufacturing pieces of woodwork to a high standard, to facilitate new gallery builds and refurbishment projects, as well as ongoing maintenance.

You will have a City & Guilds, BTEC or equivalent qualification in a woodwork discipline, or have a proven track record and demonstrable experience.

You'll be expected to work in the Museum Workshops, on the public galleries as well as gallery build/stripout sites. There will also be an opportunity to demonstrate their working objects, such as steam engines (Burnley Mill Engine) and mechanical loom.

They are looking for a strong background with your main skills in woodworking. You'll be a confident user of a variety of workshop machinery, have a good mechanical knowledge and knowledge of pneumatic or hydraulic systems. Knowledge of other areas of their work, such as mechanical systems, pneumatics, electrics, audio-visual or IT systems, would be advantageous. A good knowledge of health and safety as relevant to the role, including COSHH and risk assessments, is also required. Candidates offering CAD skills or experience would put themselves at an advantage.

Shift & Rota Requirements

This post is full-time at 36 hours per week. This includes working one weekend in three and a commensurate share of the bank holidays, currently on a shift basis (earliest start 7.30am, latest finish 7.15pm). The rota is worked out across the year and staff can usually swap shifts according to personal requirements and preferences.

Salary GBP 21,000 to GBP 25,000 depending on experience. They offer a great benefits package including a group personal pension, BUPA medical and dental cover and season ticket loan.
