This is a not for profit trade union for education, early years & childcare professionals. Varied additional benefits are offered including a contributory pension scheme and health care cash plan (paid for by the organisation).

This role is based working remotely from home; to be fully effective in supporting our local members, it is important that the successful candidate is based within the main region, potentially around the Tyne and Wear/Durham area. This role also provides supporting cover for the Yorkshire region. Travel around the agreed regional area and the adjacent Yorkshire region will be required; a driving licence and use of a car is essential for the role, and for long distance business travel a lease car is provided.

A summary of how you would enrich the working life of our members -

- Undertake casework; advising and supporting members, on challenging issues arising from their employment.
- Actively seek opportunities to recruit new members, with participation in recruitment events
- Contact local authorities in the region, to seek recognition and attend consultative meetings
- Provide support to activists within the region, to recruit new activists to train as Field Officers etc.
- Work with local media to promote the organisation and increase profile
- Organise meetings of members/non-members on specific issues of concern
- Maintaining up to date professional administration in keeping with the demands of the role

Other skills you will possess to enable you to successfully undertake the role –

- Experience of acting as a workplace trade union representative
- Good knowledge of UK employment legislation
- Confidence to represent members in challenging situations
- Good communication skills, both oral and written
- Effective listening skills and good interpersonal skills to build and develop networks
- Good IT skills to retrieve and enter basic data, communicate with members and head office
- Knowledge of the Northern England, and ideally Yorkshire, geographical region
- Ability to travel within the region and work flexibly with some unsocial hours
- Driving licence

- Trade Union or membership focused environment experience
- Advocacy skills and experience in the employment sector
- Current knowledge of education issues
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Experience of working in and understanding the management context of educational establishments
