Manufacturer of high-specification automated self-cleaning water intake screens, used on hydro-electric power plants and water utility treatment works intakes. These are very high quality and expensive systems, with typical hardware costing hundreds of thousands of pounds. They are after a good all-round engineer who has the engineering knowledge to be able to understand what the customer wants (and needs), specify the system in detail and hand it over to manufacturing. Then once built, manage (including working on) the installation stage as well.
This role would suit an experienced engineer who wants to spend the majority of time in the office working on detailed engineering projects, but also wants occasional work on site installing the systems.
Their screening system was developed for hydropower projects, but now 90% of production goes to water utility companies. They are growing rapidly in a new niche market with great potential for further long-term growth.
Key skills would be experience of understanding complex engineering systems and being able to come up with solutions to problems. Most of the engineering is mechanical, but a good working knowledge of civil, electrical and control systems are required to fully understand the system. You would be dealing with the client and their technical representatives, so good communication skills and an ability to build collaborative relationships is important.
Although this isn’t a sales role, once you were up to speed technically, you would be likely to get involved in sales as well. The sales process revolves around solving technical problems with the screens, and once this has been demonstrated the customer invariably buys them. The systems are designed using Autodesk Inventor, so either familiarity with Inventor or similar 3D design packages would be useful, though not essential.
There would be an on-site practical element to this role (10% of the time on average); their installation work needs to be precision for the systems to work correctly so they need someone with patience, proper attention to detail, practical skills and a pride in doing a good job. The less-interesting parts would include health and safety paperwork, project manuals and costed proposals, but this is a minor part of the job. For operating projects, there would be some ongoing technical support and O&M work – though as things grow this will probably be split into a separate role.
You may be a graduate engineer, though if you are qualified through experience they are still interested. You are likely to have at least ten years of relevant experience.
