This is an opportunity to join an innovative, independent, high power laser company, focused on powerful pulsed lasers developed for industrial applications, primarily for use in the materials processing and microelectronics markets.

They are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer with high power fibre laser experience to join their growing multi-disciplinary R&D team based at the Company's UK headquarters in Crawley, West Sussex.

Position Summary:

The Mechanical Engineer will work with a small team of engineers and scientists in the UK and US, from development to production of advanced high power fibre laser systems for a variety of applications that leverages the Company’s high power technology, provide technical leadership in system design, packaging engineering, and manufacturing techniques for high power fibre laser systems.

Key Responsibilities:

- Design, document and test stable, fibre laser and optical assemblies;
- Develop fibre laser packaging and manufacturing processes based on environmental and reliability performance requirements;
- Optimise designs for production using DFA/DFM principles; create models for documentation of designs for use in production processes for new or existing products;
- Execute verification test protocols that include environmental and accelerated life testing;
- Overseas travel may be required.

Requirements and Qualifications :

- BSc (MSc desired) degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant engineering or science discipline;
- Minimum 5 years of development engineering and packaging experience with high-power fibre lasers and optical assemblies, including fibre routing, mechanical packaging, thermal management, optical interface materials, and splicing processes;
- Hands-on experience in the assembly and test of high-power fibre lasers;
- Strong ability to conduct engineering analyses including heat transfer, thermal modelling, stress/strain behaviour, materials selection;
- Proficiency in finite element analysis (FEA) and thermal analysis tools and simulation software (SolidWorks preferred);
- Detailed understanding of precision opto-mechanical design and fine mechanics;
- Experience with optical adhesives and bonding methods;
- Proficiency with SolidWorks and engineering drawing practices including tolerance analysis and a working understanding of GD&T;
- Proficiency in DFA/DFM;
- Candidate shall be highly organised and detail-oriented with clear and professional written and oral communication skills;
- Experienced with New Product Introduction (NPI) and product qualification practices.
