Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Reports to: Supply Chain Manager and Chief Technical Engineer
Position: Full time
Salary: £20,000 to £25,000 basic with 10% bonus & pension
Hours: 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday

This company is a UK-based developer and manufacturer of LED and solar powered lighting systems. The company designs, develops and manufactures intelligent, robust and reliable engineered products suited to a wide range of applications. From LED solutions that lower energy bills and carbon emissions for customers across the world, including custom luminaires for street lighting, amenity lighting, signage and LED commercial lighting solutions; to the design and manufacture of complete solar lighting solutions.

Purpose of the Job:
As part of an R&D team, you will be responsible for the mechanical designs and integration of hardware solutions. The work will involve designing lighting and solar powered products as well as some in-vehicle automotive products. Innovation, value and quality are absolutely key to this product development. The design work will be varied, using SolidWorks mainly, working in a variety of materials. These products are manufactured in the low to medium volumes, where ergonomics is as important as functionality.

Main Tasks / Responsibilities:
- Computer aided design/modelling using SolidWorks as the primary design tool.
- Concept designs, creation of parts and evaluation of prototypes.
- Structural design of product casings and frames.
- Design of user panels and assembles that interact with electronic components and PCBs.
- Design of moulded parts to create cosmetic finishes and mechanical solutions.
- Active role in seeking out engineering knowledge and awareness of materials and manufacturing techniques.
- Presenting design ideas and working on concept solutions.
- Creating build documentation and assembly drawings.
- Provide mechanical design solutions to assembly requirements, field and quality issues.
- Ensuring designs are fit for purpose for environmental and thermal requirements.
- Keeping up to date with the last developments in manufacturing and technology.

Key Qualifications and Experience:
- Mechanical Engineering degree
- Minimum of 6 months of experience in mechanical design desirable but not essential
- Expert in the use of one of the major mechanical CAD packages
- Familiarity with additive manufacturing processes
- Adopts a system approach to design with some knowledge of electrical components
- Able to work in a small multidiscipline team of engineers
- Used to working on small projects with fast time to market
- Awareness of environmental factors when designing products for outdoor use, with a 20-year life span
- Experienced in applying modern materials, fasteners and adhesives
- An appreciation of industrial design and product aesthetics.
- Completing designs so they are ready for in-house manufacture
