Figures by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) have shown that the London Olympics has led to a rise in temporary work placements. Over the next quarter, 31% of surveyed companies said that they would be hiring short-term staff, providing recruiters with a good time to place temporary employees.

For many people, the latest news from the REC that jobs fell in June will have come as a disappointment. In addition to permanent roles having fallen, temporary work vacancies have also dropped off, leaving many of those who are unemployed feeling despondent about the situation.

The latest figures relating to the Olympics will, however, be seen as a positive step, especially for these wanting to take advantage of short-term and temporary roles. The REC also discovered that the demand for temporary workers was set to increase after the Games have finished, with 28% of companies saying that agency staff would continually be in demand for the coming year.

One recruitment expert in the short-term workers field said: “The role agency workers have played in setting up the Olympic facilities and ensuring they are ready on time for the event cannot be underestimated. That businesses appreciate these efforts, and are offering more work, is the greatest reward we could have wished for.”

For recruitment agencies, the Olympics provide the perfect time to fill temporary vacancies with workers. If economic conditions improve as a result of the sporting event, many employees could find these short-term placements turning into permanent roles.
