The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has said that more attention needs to be paid to broadband networks if the Government is to reach its target of providing high speed internet to 90% of British homes and businesses by 2015. Access to the internet is crucial if modern day businesses want to survive and prosper, with a wealth of employment options set to be generated if rural economies begin to flourish. Without a lot more effort, however, broadband will not reach rural locations, the CLA said.
Whilst many British cities are receiving a lot of investment to increase access and speeds of broadband networks, many businesses lying in rural districts are lucky if they are even able to access dial-up networks. If these companies are to grow and prosper, it is vital that they are able to connect to the internet easily.
The president of the CLA, Harry Cotterell, said: “Broadband acts as an economic driver for rural businesses as well as helping the social development of rural communities, but between 15% and 20% of those who live in rural areas are still unable to receive anywhere near the Government’s benchmark of two megabits per second (Mbps).”
The issue continues to generate a lot of debate because it has serious implications on the future of the economy. Rural companies have the promise of providing a huge amount of employment in the months and years to come; however, this will only occur as long as 21st century services, such as high speed broadband, can be provided to them.
