Tesco Announces Recruitment Plan For 20,000 New Jobs

Tesco is to stage a wide-ranging and continuing recruitment drive for some 20,000 new jobs over the next two years, after announcing plans for “significant investment” in a number of areas.

The supermarket giant is planning to invest heavily in its customer service operations, as well as in opening new stores and refurbishing existing ones.

The recruitment drive will seek employees for roles to cover every situation, with full and part-time positions being created, as well as apprenticeship training schemes for new and existing staff.

The company’s chief executive, Richard Brasher, said that the jobs will be “a massive confidence boost” for the British economy and help get thousands of people into work.

“In unprecedented economic conditions like these, major businesses have a big responsibility to step forward, invest and create jobs,” he said. “Today’s announcement is a huge shot in the arm for the UK economy. At the core of this investment is our determination to deliver the best shopping experience for our customers, bar none.”

Tesco is currently in the process of trying to remedy the effects of trading difficulties over the festive period, which included seeing nearly £5 billion wiped from its value in a single day after poor trading figures were revealed.
