Recruitment Of Temporary Staff Rises

Lingering caution over the strength of the economic recovery has led to rise in the recruitment of temporary and agency workers, according to the latest figures from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

The REC's most recent JobsOutlook survey showed that some 83 per cent of employers predicted that they would increase their use of temporary staff during the next 12 months, up from the 80 per cent figure from last month. 

In contrast, just 49 per cent of businesses said that they would be increasing the number of permanent employees on their staff, which fell from 66 per cent in last month's survey. 

Figures have shown that the number of people employed in temporary positions in the UK is at an all time high, estimated to be around 1.6 million. The REC believes that employers are wanting to keep their workforce options as flexible as possible while the UK and global economic conditions remain unstable. 

REC director of research, Roger Tweedy, said that the numbers were a clear reflection of a very unstable economic context. 

"With the economy continuing to stagnate, businesses will understandably remain cautious, which is why we are seeing an increase in the longer-term demand for flexible staff such as temporary and contract workers," he said. "This is a timely reminder of how a flexible workforce can help employers meet peaks and troughs in demand for services and products during uncertain times."
