Geoff Newman, chief executive of Recruitment Genius, comments to Director Magazine were recent published regarding recruitment and specifically social media trends. Below is the unabridged letter sent:
I read your article (“Road to Recovery”, February) about recruitment and the economic upturn with interest but would question some of the assumptions made.
Having run successful recruitment agencies and online job sites for over a decade I believe this recession has had a different effect on recruitment trends. Specifically, many companies realised staff are their only true competitive advantage and as such made many part-time rather than lose their talent entirely. Consequently we find little appetite for recruitment among small companies who are still to take up the ’slack’ in their existing workforce.
Like many businesses, we have had to switch our business model in recognition that customers typically find “agencies costly, and press advertising time-consuming and often unsuccessful”. This has led us to embrace online technologies such as those you mentioned to help companies fill their jobs for £199.
As your article suggests these technologies allow a more cost-effective service. However unlike many online services our customers are not “overwhelmed by responses” because we personally filter the response to send only relevant applications. We can also manage the relationship with Jobcentre Plus to remove the “source of frustration for many business owners”.
Unfortunately I do not share your enthusiasm for promoting jobs through social networks. Foremost this is because to become effective it requires an ‘audience’ to read your message, and the only way to achieve this is via lots of content which is very expensive to create or obtain.
Cost effective recruitment solutions are very important and online services seem an inevitable method to achieving this. Whilst it is early days for my new business model, initial signs are very encouraging with many companies signed up and over two thousand jobs successfully filled throughout the UK since December 2009. I sincerely hope many small companies will strengthen the economy by recruiting whilst saving thousands of pounds by embracing new methods available.
