More than 5,000 online applications have been submitted following a recruitment drive by supermarket chain, Morrisons, for its new distribution centre in Somerset.
The applicants are vying to be selected for the 600 positions being created at the new centre, which will be managed by DHL Supply Chain and distribute stock to stores across the south west of England.
The company has vowed to fill the positions with local people, wherever possible. Around 1,000 people will actually be taken on by the company, to accommodate part-time and shared roles.
DHL Supply Chain's operations director, Bob Tanner, said that they were looking forward to establishing a loyal staff of local people.
"We are still in the early stages of recruitment but are hopeful that a large percentage of the successful applicants will come from Bridgwater and the wider Sedgemoor area," he explained.
The group logistics and supply chain director for Morrisons, Neal Austin, said the high volume of applicants was a very encouraging sign.
"I am pleased to hear that there has been such a high level of interest in the variety of jobs that will become available at the distribution centre, particularly from those local to the area," said Austin.
