John Lewis Expansion Sparks Recruitment Drive

Leading department store chain, John Lewis, is to embark on a major recruitment drive within the next year, after announcing substantial nationwide store expansions.

The company has revealed plans to place ten new smaller stores in areas of the UK that had previously been deemed unsuitable for one of their larger ‘at home’ shops. The expansion will begin with the opening of a new branch in the Devon city of Exeter early next year, which alone will require 300 new staff.

The managing director of John Lewis, Andy Street, said the expansion had been planned to fulfil clear demand from many parts of the UK where they currently do not have a presence.

“There is a huge potential, and a clear demand from customers, for John Lewis to expand into more key locations in the UK,” he said. “This new flexible approach to the size of our shops allows us to forge ahead with our growth plans to introduce John Lewis branches and our full-line assortment to cities and towns where we have long wanted to have a presence.”

He said the Exeter recruitment would just be the beginning of a major wave, and the each new store would be looking to take on a similar number of people, resulting in the creation of 300 new jobs in total.
