Internships Crucial To Graduate Recruitment

Applying for an internship is becoming the most important part of the recruitment process for modern graduates, after figures showed that more than a third of this year's graduate vacancies have been scooped up by young people who had previously worked for the companies in question.
The figures, from report compiled by High Fliers Research, showed that 36 per cent of this year's graduate jobs will be filled by people who had already been part of the company while at university, through summer internships.
Many of these internships are advertised among other full-time jobs on normal online recruitment portals, which indicates how standard a part of the career ladder they have become.
The managing director of High Fliers Research, Martin Birchall, that the figures would come as a "stark warning" to university students and recent graduates.
"In a highly competitive graduate job market, new graduates who've not had any work experience at all during their time at university have little hope of landing a well-paid job with a leading employer, irrespective of the academic results they achieve or the university they've attended," he said.
There was optimism in the figures, however, in terms of the number of roles becoming available. On average, employers are expecting to hire 6.4 per cent more new graduates in the summer of 2012 than in 2011.
