BAE Boss Says Apprenticeships Key To Recruitment

One of the leading recruitment executives at international security and aerospace firm, BAE Systems, has said he hopes their commitment to recruiting trainees and apprentices is presenting a real and viable option for post-GCSE students.
Richard Hamer, the company's education director, explained that many students would be looking at practical forms of work and learning instead of academic study, in the wake of last Thursday's GCSE results. He said he hoped that the BAE programme would show them that such options exist and present very attractive opportunities.
"BAE Systems is committed to supporting the development of engineering and manufacturing skills and to helping young people engage in STEM [science, technology, engineering and maths] subjects," he said.
"Each year we recruit more than 250 apprentices onto our programme and, for 2012, we are currently looking to take on just under 300 across our different businesses. There are currently around 1,000 in training with BAE Systems in the UK."
Mr Hamer said that the cultivation of apprentices and helping them develop the high-level skills that both they and the country need, will be the backbone of the UK's competitive future.
BAE Systems also offers graduate recruitment programmes, with around 150 graduates taking up positions this September.
